Critical Assignment

Assume you are a practicum student therapist at a local university counseling center. Many university students seek treatment for a variety of psychological issues, and one of the most common topics is about career development.  Some students are unsure of what direction to take with their careers, some students are discouraged with their current career path, and others feel pressure from family members to pursue careers they don’t want for themselves.  In group supervision, you learn your practicum colleagues have similar client situations.  Because the university clients are discussing career issues so frequently in therapy, you are not able to adequately practice your other therapeutic skills such as couples therapy, attachment issues, substance use, severe mental health diagnoses, etc. 

To help balance the needs of the university clients with your training needs, the clinic director asks you to create a workshop made for university students regarding career development.  University students will be able to attend the career development workshop to help with their career-related concerns in a group format, while opening more space in the practicum therapists’ case loads for other psychological issues.  The primary teaching tool used in the workshop will be a Power Point slideshow presentation.  The slideshow will provide an overview of career counseling and how it might help a variety of people. Details about the requirements are provided below.

The presentation should be 18 slides total and should include graphics to enhance the visual quality. It should also include a total of at least 5 peer-reviewed academic sources.  These sources should be cited throughout the presentation in APA format and organized in an APA-formatted reference list.

Here is an overview of the 18 slides you will create:

Slide 1: title slide

Slide 2-4: introduction to career counseling (5-6 bullet points per slide discussing the idea of career counseling and how it can be helpful to a wide variety of people; examples should be included)

Slides 5-8: theoretical considerations (5-6 bullet points per slide discussing various theories that contribute to career counseling, including trait and factor theory, developmental, learning, and cognitive theories; specific examples should be included)

Slides 9-12: assessment options (5-6 bullet points per slide discussing the various types of career counseling assessments and how they can help people seeking clarity about career issues; specific examples should be included)

Slides 12-15: mental health (5-6 bullet points per slide discussing various mental health considerations for a variety of populations that can arise in career counseling and the impact of career uncertainty on mental health; specific examples should be included)

Slides 16-17: faith integration (5-6 bullet points per slide discussing your personal ideas about how career counseling fits/doesn’t fit with the Christian faith, how you believe career counseling services affect the Body of Christ; supporting verses should be included)
